Biographical Note

John Peter Magos was born in Sparta, Greece on October 27, 1903. He immigrated to the United States with his parents before he turned one year old. Magos graduated from Lane Technical High School in 1923, attended the Armour Institute of Technology, and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1938. He worked for the R.T. Crane Company from 1923 until he retired in 1965. He worked for the Office of Scientific Research and Development during World War II and developed a replaceable gun liner, among other contributions. Magos married Dorothy June Venton in 1934 and had two children, Alice Helen, born in 1935, and Dorothea Diana, born in 1938. John Peter Magos died in 1980, Dorothy June Venton died in 2004, and Dorothea Diana died in 2017. The contents of the collection were collected and donated by Alice Helen Magos.

Scope and Content Note
The Magos Family Papers include biographies, correspondence, photographs, academic records, legal documents, awards, and notebooks that detail the life and work of John Peter Magos and his family. Each member of the family has a biography, some more abbreviated than others, in addition to documents detailing educational achievements and family history. John Peter Magos is the focus of the majority of the materials, primarily his education and work at the R.T. Crane Company and for the United States government during World War II.
Arrangement
This collection was arranged by the donor to tell her family's story. It was donated in a binder and the arrangement was preserved when the contents were transferred to folders.

The collection is open to research.
Custodial History Note
This collection was donated to the National Hellenic Museum in 2019. It was donated by Alice Magos at her home in Wilmette, Illinois, and was transported to the museum by Collections Manager, Margaret Fraser.
