Object Description
Rectangular, wood printing block with the etched image of an ancient greek warrior. The man is depicted from the abdomen up and is shown in profile. Because the image is worn down and damaged it is not very clear but the figure appears to be a statue of a man with the near arm broken off at the shoulder and a large, plumed, Corinthian helmet covering most of his face.
Origin
The Corinthian helmet type was used more in statuary than in battle because it evoked romantic and nostalgic imagery but impeded sight and hearing on the battle field. Ares is almost exclusively depicted in a similar decorated helmet. This stamp could very well be depicting Ares although it could depict any ancient greek warrior.
