Object Description
Small rectangular wood block with metal etching. The block itself is a reddish-brown color and the etching is a dull silver. The etching reads "Macedonian Society of Chicago". Next to this writing is a crest which appears to say, "Macedonian Greek Hellans". There are olive branches under these words. The back of the block has some black dirt buildup stuck to it.
Origin
Donated by John Damianos. The printing block was used in a linotype printing machine. Linotype presses allowed for the casting of entire lines to be printed at a time. Linotype printing was eventually succeeded by lithograph printing and computer typesetting during the 1960's and 1970's. This printing block was used by the Chicago-based, Greek Art Printing Company that was owned and operated by Aristotle Damianos. The Greek Art Printing Company was responsible for the printing of a wide range of materials, including wedding invitations, invoices, flyers, programs, letterhead, etc., for Greek businesses, organizations, institutions, and individuals in the Chicago area, and elsewhere.

The Macedonian Society of Chicago was an organization that operated out of Skokie, Illinois. It has since ceased to exist. It used to organize community events and sponsored a dance troupe called the Hellas Dancers. This troupe sought to bring old Greek culture to life through dance. They disbanded along with the Macedonian Society of Chicago, but reformed in 2009.
