Object Description
Black and white lithographic print. The background is black, and in the middle there is what looks like two griffins facing each other, with the print being made from the side. There is a black line like a crack diagonally through the middle, along with black lines along the edges. The bottom right corner is signed "I Kilimi 94". It is in a frame with white matting and a white frame. The bottom left corner has a "3/3"
Origin
The lithograph was donated to the museum by Ionna Kilimi, who was the artist. The lithograph was made in 1994 and is titled "A Culture in Crisis." The back says that it was "Inspired by a Greek Sarcophagus"

Lithography is the process by which oil is placed on a flat surface. Water would then be added. Since the oil repelled water, the water would fill in the blanks around the oil. After this, oil based paint could be added, which would only stick to the orignial drawing (since it was also in oil). A paper would then be placed over this in order to transfer the image.
