Object Description
A oval medallion with a loop attached at the top through which one can run a string or a chain. The center portrays St. George in the thrones of battle with a dragon seen in the foreground. St. George adorned in battle armor and a cape, is shown riding a horse and holding a spear which is pointed at the mouth of the dragon.
Origin
The object is owned by the Powers family and is connected to other items and photographs within the same collection. This is an icon of Saint George a Roman chiliarch officer who served under Emperor Diocletian during the third century. Saint George was born in Cappadocia (modern-day Turkey) and raised in a small town in Palestine called Lydda. Saint George strong in his faith refused to renounce his faith and was tortured and then martyred. Of the many miracles worked by St George, the legend of him slaying a dragon that was terrorizing the city is the most well-known story.
