Object Description
The first Greek Orthodox Bishop of the Diocese of Chicago, the Rt. Rev. Philaretos (Johannides). Formal portrait. Black and white photograph. Man with a beard and mustache wearing the regalia of a Greek Orthodox clergyman.
Origin
During his time, Bishop Philaretos organized 14 new parishes and established catechatical schools that transmitted the Faith and ancestral legacy to 10,000 boys and girls in his diocese. His work established Chicago as an important center of the Greek Orthodox church in the new world.
