Object Description
American Hellenic Education Progressive Association (AHEPA) name badge from the 12TH National Convention held August 15-25, 1935. The badge is red, white, and blue with gold/bronze colored metal. At the very top of the badge is a metal rectangle that looks like it should be holding something, like a slip of paper of some sort, but there is nothing in it. Around the perimeter of this rectangle is a greek-like geometrical design. Below that, is a red, white, and blue vertically striped piece of fabric. In gold writing, it reads, "12th National Convention - Reception". Below the fabric is a badge-shaped metal piece. There is a top banner that reads, "Chicago". Directly under that is a medium-sized bald eagle. In the background behind the eagle there is a skyline or buildings of some sort. The eagle is perched upon a circular wreath of branches. Inside that wreath are crossed swords with a blue cross in front of them. Along the side perimeters of the metal-badge are the words, "Order of AHEPA, Aug. 18-25, 1935." AHEPA is the largest Greek-American association in the world with chapters in the United States, Canada, Greece, Cyprus, and sister chapters in Australia and New Zealand. It was established in 1922 by visionary Greek Americans to protect Hellenes from prejudice originating from the KKK, and in its history, AHEPA joined with the NAACP and B'nai B'rith International to fight discrimination. AHEPA's mission is to promote the ancient Greek ideals of education, philanthropy, civic responsibility and family and individual excellence through community service and volunteerism.
