Origin
Helen Miras was born in Apidia, Laconia, Greece in 1909. She married Christas Mercury in 1940 and lived in his home in Niata, which was a neighboring village of her home town. Her dowry included these pieces, which was all hand-woven by her. However, much of the dowry was lost as the family fled from to Greece to Manitoba, Canada, because of the Greek Civil War.

Christas left in 1947 and sent for Helen and his three daughters in 1948. Helen and her daughters Catherine (five), Mary (four), and Patricia (two) flew from Athens to London to Iceland to Taranto. There she was met by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law and they all took the train to her new home in Manitoba, where she was reunited with her husband.
