Object Description
Round ecru-colored linen doily with cut work and lace edging. There is floral cutwork in the doily with geometric-designed lace. The cutwork is done in circles. In the middle, there is a big circle, which is surrounded by four spirals. On top of each spiral, there are four ovals. In between the spirals, there are some more ovals and circle cutworks. The lace tatting looks gridlike.
Origin
This belonged to the donor's mother Koula (Lazou) Counelis who came to America to marry the donor's father, Antonio Counelis in Chicago Heights, IL. She was born in Karistos, Eubea, Greece. After Chicago Heights, her and her husband moved to Berwyn, IL, where she lived for 44 years and died at the age of 96.
Tatting is using a series of knots and loops to make the fabric more durable. It was made to imitate point lace.
